Lavrov proposes relocating UN HQ
Speaking at the Forum of the Future 2050 in Moscow, Lavrov suggested that Sochi would be a better location for the UN than its current base in midtown Manhattan, where it has been situated since 1951. He recalled that Stalin had once seriously proposed an alternative location, but ultimately conceded to U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt, who favored New York.
Lavrov acknowledged that such a move would be highly complicated due to the institutional and logistical ties the UN has developed in New York over the decades. “These structures have grown deep roots,” he said, noting the physical infrastructure and permanent staff contracts that now tie the organization to its current home.
He also referenced past frustrations with the U.S. hosting the UN, particularly when Washington denied visas to Russian diplomats in 2019 during Donald Trump’s presidency, preventing them from attending a UN General Assembly session.
Lavrov also reiterated Russia's position that the UN Security Council should be reformed to better reflect global representation. He argued that countries like India, Brazil, and African nations deserve permanent seats to address the current overrepresentation of Western powers.
